Why Choose Miami Burn Center
South Florida: One of the nation’s best burn centers is in your backyard.
As one of only five Florida centers certified by the American Burn Association and American College of Surgeons, we are the sole South Florida burn center with Level 1 verification for both adult and pediatric treatment.
Helping Burn Patients Heal and Recover for Five Decades
We treat burns large and small for patients in Florida and the Caribbean.
Every year, around 225 burn patients are admitted to Miami Burn Center, and we manage nearly 400 more on an outpatient basis. Each patient’s entire course of treatment takes place in the burn center, which is located within the Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial.
Using leading burn treatment techniques, our work begins with initial resuscitation and wound evaluation, which determines whether patients are admitted to the intensive care unit or the non-critical burn care area, or receive treatment as an outpatient. All patients receive wound care from surgeons or specially trained nurses.
Experienced occupational and physical therapists in our specialized rehabilitation area work with both inpatients and outpatients. And our dedicated burn psychologist, which not all American Burn Association-verified centers have, provides the emotional and psychological support that many burn patients require.
Finally, we take pride in our role as an academic health center, which empowers our teams to create clinical solutions for patients dealing with challenging burn injuries.
Points of Pride
Since its inception in 1965, the Miami Burn Center has participated in many projects and has conducted research to improve the survival and recovery of burn patients.
- Instead of utilizing very painful “scrubbing” to remove nonviable tissue and help prevent infection, the team researched and now uses a topical ointment in a slow, less intense debridement process.
- In order to intervene early and effectively against debilitating depression, a study helped define the psychological issues of patients and families.
- When a study conducted by the Burn Center showed that adding vitamin C to a patient’s fluid drip within the first 24 hours would decrease fluid requirements and act as an antioxidant, the practice was implemented.
- Heat loss in patients with large burn injuries is common; preventing hypothermia is especially challenging. The Miami Burn Center had the world’s first experience in using a system to control core body temperature and keep patients warm from the inside.
- Infection is a major threat to burn victims, so studies regularly focus on ways to reduce infection rates as well as lessen their effects.
- The Burn Center is one of the first centers in the United States to try a novel stem cell therapy for burn patients. In this clinical trial, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Defense, the Burn Center will compare standard treatment with stem cell based therapy. This leading-edge research may provide the first alternative to skin graft surgery, allowing improved healing with minimal to no scarring.
